An Advent Prayer

An Advent Prayer

I always look forward to Advent,

a chance to prepare my heart,

Lord, for your coming;

but the season gets off to a gallop

and soon I am heading

in a direction and at a speed

I did not intend.

Shop windows are full of light.

Not the shop doorways, though,

where the homeless crouch,

holding out an empty cup,

clinging to expectation.

They at least are true

to the spirit of the season.

For me, no dark or silent waiting

but a madcap rushing,

and I am back in the very same

place I was last year.

This Advent, Lord, help me down

from the merry-go-round,

or, rather… stop me getting on.
