Five Finger Prayer

Pope Francis devised The Five Finger Prayer when he was Archbishop of Buenos Aires. It is a simple way to remember all those for whom we should pray.

The thumb is closest to us …

We pray for those who are dear to us or who play a big part in our lives.

The index finger is the one we point with …

We pray for all who have inspired or guided us… as well as those who challenge or reproach us, thanking God for every ‘gift in disguise’.

The middle finger is the tallest…

We pray for our leaders and anyone who carries a burden of responsibility, remembering those who do difficult or dangerous jobs in order to take care of us all.

The ring finger is the weakest…

We remember anyone who might be sick, vulnerable, disadvantaged or in any kind of particular need.

The little finger is the least of all …

Though it might be furthest from our mind, we must not forget to pray  for ourselves.
